Nibbles is a fishing log. This page explains, in plain English, what data the app collects and what happens to it. If anything here is unclear, email us โ see the bottom of this page.
Your catch data stays on your device
Everything you log โ catches, photos, spots, notes โ is stored locally on your iPhone using Apple's SwiftData framework. There's no account to create, no sign-up, and no central database of your data on our servers. We don't sell your data, because we don't have a copy of it to sell.
Location
Nibbles uses your device's GPS to pin each catch to where you caught it and to group catches into your own private fishing spots. This location data stays on your device โ it isn't uploaded anywhere or shared with us. You can turn location off entirely in Settings if you'd rather not use it; the app still works, you just won't get spot grouping, hot-spot alerts, or automatic size/bag-limit checks for that catch.
Third-party services we use
A couple of features send limited, specific data to outside services to do their job:
- WillyWeather API โ to fetch tide and weather conditions for a catch, we send that catch's location and time to WillyWeather. We don't send your name, your device identity, or any other catch data.
- Fishial API โ if you photograph a fish and want automatic species identification, that photo may be sent to Fishial for analysis. You can always identify a species manually instead, and your manual entry always takes priority over anything Fishial suggests.
These are the only outside services Nibbles talks to for its core features. Neither is used for advertising or tracking โ they're used to answer a specific question ("what's the tide here right now?", "what species is this?") and nothing more. Voice-log parsing, an optional feature, is covered separately below.
Voice logging (optional)
Nibbles also offers an optional way to log a catch by talking instead of typing: speak a description and Claude, an AI model built by Anthropic, parses it into structured fields like species, size, bait, and technique. This is off by default โ you turn it on yourself in Settings after seeing what it does. When it's on, only the text transcript of what you said is sent (never audio), routed through our own backend on the way to Anthropic's API. Anthropic doesn't use API data like this to train its models, and only retains it briefly to operate the service, under Anthropic's own API terms โ not indefinitely, and not for anything beyond parsing your request. If voice logging is off, or unavailable for any reason, catches are still parsed entirely on your device instead, so logging by voice never depends on this feature working.
No analytics, no tracking
This website doesn't use cookies, analytics, or any tracking scripts โ what you see is what's here, nothing is measured. The app itself doesn't include analytics or advertising SDKs either.
Looking ahead: iCloud sync
We may add optional iCloud (CloudKit) sync in a future version, so your catches can move between your own devices or be shared with people you choose. That isn't built yet. If and when it ships, this page will be updated first, and syncing will be something you opt into โ not the default.
